Baryogenesis and Electric Dipole Moments


The origin of the baryon asymmetry of the universe remains an important, but unsolved problem for cosmology and particle/nuclear physics. The CP-violation present in the Standard Model is insufficient to produce the baryon asymmetry, but there exist a variety of scenarios for new physics that may provide the necessary CP-violation. If the baryon asymmetry was produced during the electroweak phase transition (electroweak baryogenesis), then new searches for the permanent electric dipole moments of the neutron, electron, and neutral atoms may discover this new CP-violation. I discuss recent theoretical developments in electroweak baryogenesis and their implications for both EDM searches and future collider studies.
