'Nuclear tidal waves' in high-K bands in the 182-Os region
A number of high-K bands in osmium nuclei have an unusual behaviour in
that they show irregular M1 and E2 transitions on top of the K-isomer.
The transition energy does not show the expected dE ~ I behaviour but is
approximately constant along the band. This has been interpreted as a
coupling of collective rotation and gamma-vibrations (sometimes called
nuclear tidal waves). I will show new results for some osmium and
rhenium isotopes and discuss the conditions needed for this novel type
of nuclear excitation.
