Neutrino Emission from Phases of Dense Matter in Compact Stars
Abstract: Neutron stars are astrophysical neutrino factories which
cool principally through neutrino emission for several hundreds of
years during which they are observable. Their cooling pattern can
give clues as to the nature of dense matter in their interior. I will
discuss various phases of dense matter including quark matter, and show
how neutrino emission processes can have very different sources
depending on the phase. However, detecting these phases definitively may
still prove elusive, and I will highlight the role of photon emission in
making this distinction.
