Towards Model Independent and Perturbative Shell Model Effective
Interactions
Conventional microscopic calculations of effective shell model
interactions in nuclei are model dependent and non-perturbative. Through the
use of renormalization group methods, I describe an approach that eliminates
much of the model dependence arising from the particular model of the free
space nucleon-nucleon interaction used as microscopic input for many-body
calculations. Perturbative calculations of shell
model interactions are shown to exhibit improved convergence properties
in several nuclei.
