Design of nanostructures: synthesis and properties
Argonne Physics Division Colloquium - 20 Jan 2012
11:00 AM, Building 203 auditorium

We show that different types (spheres, rods, hollow nanoparticles, dumbbells) of nanostructures can be synthesized by chemical approaches. We will discuss their self-assembly into binary periodic and aperiodic superlattices. We will discuss in detail the mechanisms of their formation and correlate synthetic approach and properties with respect to application nanostructures as electrode materials in batteries and as nanocatalysts. We will analyze the structural and mechanical stability of nanoparticle structures with different degrees of ordering using time resolved small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray diffraction techniques and estimate the possibility of manipulation of interparticle spacing by thermal treatment and pressure.
