Synthetic Paths to the Heaviest Elements
Physics Division Colloquium - 12 Oct. 2001

I will review the exciting developments that have occurred over the past six years in the synthesis of new heavy nuclei. The current situation regarding the element 118 fiasco will be discussed. Recent experiments on the determination of \Lambda_n/\Lambda__f for heavy nuclei will be discussed along with their importance to the hot fusion approach to the synthesis of new heavy nuclei. The possible role of n-rich radioactive beams in heavy element research will be presented along with the results of experimental studies of fusion with n-rich radioactive beams.
