HERMES is an international collaboration which is studying the spin structure of the nucleon at DESY, Hamburg, using internal polarized gas targets in the stored electron beam of the HERA accelerator. Unlike earlier experiments, in HERMES emphasis is placed on measurment of spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. Results will be presented for reactions ranging from pion production to virtual Compton scattering, and their implications for understanding the spin structure of the nucleon will be discussed.
