The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon as a Probe of the Standard Model of Particle Interactions
Physics Division Colloquium - 8 Jun 2001

The (g-2) experiment at BNL has recently published a new result for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, amu = 11 659 202(14)(6) X 10-10. This result shows a small discrepancy of the measured value of amu with the most recent theoretical estimates of this quantity within the Standard Model of particle physics. I will review the nature of the different contributions to amu within the Standard Model, and discuss the implications of the present discrepancy between theory and experiment for theories extending the Standard Model description of physics at the electroweak scale.
