Joseph Lykken,
The Search for Extra Dimensions
Physics Division Colloquium - 3 Dec 1999

Common sense tells us that we inhabit a world which, on macroscopic scales, extends in three spatial dimensions and one time dimension. However recent developments in string theory suggest that the gauge forces and particles of the Standard Model may be confined to a dynamical membrane living in a higher-dimensional spacetime. In this case there may be extra compact spatial dimensions with size as large as a millimeter. There may even be extra dimensions of infinite extent. This dramatically new picture of our universe is testable in collider experiments.
