Pushing Frontiers in Particle Physics: The Powers and Paradoxes of Megascience

As progress in particle physics required larger and more costly experiments, the dynamics of megascience took shape. One consequence of the evolution of this bigger big science was that the largest experiments became long-lasting institutions for conducting effectively unending experiments. Drawing on a study of Fermilab in the 1970s and 80s, this talk points out a series of ironies and conflicts in the new physics deriving from the intensifying competition for limited resources.
