Pushing Frontiers in Particle Physics: The Powers and Paradoxes of Megascience

As progress in particle physics required larger and more costly experiments, the dynamics of �megascience� took shape. One consequence of the evolution of this bigger �big science� was that the largest experiments became long-lasting institutions for conducting effectively unending experiments. Drawing on a study of Fermilab in the 1970s and 80s, this talk points out a series of ironies and conflicts in the new physics deriving from the intensifying competition for limited resources.
