Understanding the Strong Interaction -- Recent Progress and the Opportunities Provided by Jefferson Lab at 12 GeV

We review recent progress in determining physical hadron properties through experiments at Jefferson Lab and through lattice QCD. Lattice QCD is now able to deliver remarkably accurate results for some physical observables. We will discuss the mass of the nucleon and the strange magnetic moment of the proton as examples -- the latter providing a wonderful example of the advantages of the technical capabilities of Jefferson Lab. We also highlight the opportunities for new science with Jefferson Lab at 12 GeV, including its relationship to other major facilities planned worldwide in nuclear physics.
