The Science Driving the Jefferson Lab 12-GeV Upgrade

The 12-GeV Upgrade will double the maximum energy of the CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab. It will provide new insights into the structure of the nucleon, the transition between the hadronic and quark-gluon descriptions of matter, and the nature of quark confinement. It also allows for specific symmetry tests in hadronic physics. An overview will be given on our present knowledge of hadronic matter and QCD, with the emphasis on what issues will be addressed with the research themes of this Upgrade.
