Perturbative QCD: the Phenomenology of Quarks and Gluons

Although Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is generally accepted as the correct theory of the strong interactions, our understanding of this fundamental component of the standard model is far from complete. After a brief prologue, aimed at placing QCD studies in historical and intellectual perspective, I will address studies of QCD using high energy scattering experiments. A lightning ``derivation" of perturbative rules from the QCD Lagrangian using basic quantum mechanics, will be followed by a description of the phenomenology of quarks and gluons in experiments that are sensitive to QCD dynamics at very short time scales. I will conclude with a description of some efforts to bridge the gap between perturbative and nonperturbative QCD in the evolution from short to long distances.
