Estimated Beam Rates at the Exit of AIRIS

Beam RatesFor 10 MeV/u primary beams (~8-9 MeV/u secondary beams). Rates can be uncertain up to an order of magnitude. For any questions or comments please contact Calem Hoffman.

Table of rates:

Parameters included in the rate estimations

Primary Beam:

  • Energy - 10 MeV/u
  • Intensity - 1 particle-uA
  • Targets:

  • ~2 mg/cm2 average thickness [~1020 atoms per cm2]
  • Assumed liquid film targets for proton and deuterons and solid rotating targets for Be and C

  • Cross Sections:

  • Integrated cross sections were estimated from experiment from DWBA calculations
  • Angular distributions were calculated using the code PTOLEMY

  • AIRIS Transmission:

  • Transmission through AIRIS was calculated for a number of specific cases using TRACK
  • Reaction kinematics, angular distributions, and recoil particle straggling were accounted for using LISE++ to generate the input particle rays for TRACK
  • The secondary beam transport was opitmized while ensuring suficient suppression of the unreacted primary beam
  • Smooth functions based on these data were determined for the different classes of reaction type e.g. (d,p), (d,n), +2n, +2p etc.
  • AIRIS Transmissions Estimated transmission values through AIRIS from detailed ion-optics calculations for a select number of reactions (data points). The solid lines are the adopted transmission functions for the specific reactions used in the global rates estimate calculations.

    Charge State Fraction:

  • Fully stripped ions (q=Z) were assumed
  • For 10 MeV/u primary beams, the fraction for Z < 9 is 1 (100% in the fully stripped charge state)
  • Above Z = 8, a linear extrapolation was applied to account for the <1 charge state fraction in the q=Z fully stripped ion
