In-medium similarity renormalization group for nuclei and nuclear matter

The in-medium similarity renormalization group (SRG) can be used to transform the nuclear many-body problem, which is highly non-perturbative and strongly correlated, into a system that can be described by a dominant HF mean-field plus a small (A-dependent) residual two-body interaction. Through the use of normal-ordering techniques, the evolution of the dominant 3-, 4-, ... A-body forces is efficiently included as density-dependent 0-,1-, and 2-body interactions. In my talk, I outline the basic formalism of this new approach and present preliminary results from calculations of infinite nuclear matter and closed shell systems.
