Second Announcment

A conference on Nuclear Structure entitled Waltzing to the Nuclear Limits, honoring Lee Riedinger, will be held at Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Feb. 25-27, 2011. The conference will begin Friday late afternoon and end by noon on Sunday. Saturday will have morning and late afternoon sessions, allowing for time to enjoy the area before, during and after the conference. The conference website is: www.phy.anl.gov/nuclearlimits2011 .

The conference will cover a wide variety of topics in nuclear structure, with a focus on the extremes, including the limits of angular momentum, and binding energy, and the study of exotic topologies in nuclei far from stability. New experimental work and theoretical developments, and the links between these two approaches will be explored. Shell structure and single particle motion (reflecting Maria Goeppert Mayer's analogy of nucleonic motion as a femtoscopic waltz) as well as residual interactions (pairing, proton-neutron interactions and more) will constitute important topics. This includes the breakdown of shell structure, now frequently being seen, the stability of the heaviest nuclei, mapping the drip lines, and new decay modes. Collective modes and structural evolution across the wide spans of nuclei that are now becoming available will form another focus, including possibilities for new manifestations of correlated behavior in nuclei. The specific and varied capabilities and opportunities provided by current and future exotic beam facilities will also be discussed.

Lee Riedinger has played an important role for decades in many of these areas, in both research and mentoring, and has enhanced nuclear physics with extensive service to our community as well. The conference will honor his career achievements.

Hilton Head is easily reachable by air to Savannah (1 hour away) and Hilton Head itself (10 minutes away), There is a major international airport in Charlotte, North Carolina with connections to Savannah and Hilton Head. Hilton Head is also easily reachable by car from a number of places in the southeast. Activities at Sea Pines include tennis, golf, biking, walking, beaches, alligator and bird watching, kayaking, dolphin watching, and some low country historical sites.

Due to very generous support from a number of institutions and companies, we have been able to keep the conference fee low at $200.00 U.S. In addition, a portion of these contributions will be used to cover the cost of the Conference Banquet for registered attendees. Guests of attendees will be charged $90.00 if they wish to attend the Conference Banquet. (The registration fee rises to U.S. $ 250, after Jan. 14, 2011, including for those who choose to pay at the Conference.) We have also arranged special lodging rates of U.S. $ 119 (plus taxes and resort fee) for the nights of Feb. 24,25,26. Lodging reservations should be made directly to the Sea Pines Resort which is holding a block of rooms at its Inn. The final deadline for lodging reservations is Jan 14, 2011. Details of how to register, pay the registration fee, and book your lodging are found on the Conference web site which also has further information on the venue itself, on Sea Pines and the surrounding area. The scientific program is sketched on the web site and will be updated as it is formulated.

We encourage early registration (even if you choose to pay later) so that we can assess the attendance and develop the scientific program

We look forward to you joining us in Hilton Head in February, 2011 to celebrate Lee's achievements and discuss the current frontiers of nuclear structure physics.

Best regards,

Rick Casten (for the organizing committee: Ani Aprahamian, Mike Carpenter, RFC, Jolie Cizewski, Daryl Hartley, Filip Kondev, Witek Nazarewicz, and Mark Riley)
