The era of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is here, and the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is ready for first physics. I will begin with a short story of the first start-up of the LHC, what went wrong, the aftermath, and the exciting re-start now underway. We will then look into the heavy-ion physics capabilities and plans for the CMS detector.
