Ice Hockey Seen Through the Lens of Physics
Physics Division Colloquium - 3 April 2009

Ice hockey is not only a popular winter pastime but also a great topic of study for physicists, perhaps more so than any other sport. From thermodynamics to mechanics, many concepts are needed to understand, for example, the slipperiness of ice, the slap shot and the force of impact between colliding players. In addition to bringing a better understanding of the sport, physics and other sciences are contributing to making hockey a better and safer game via equipment improvement. In this talk I will discuss some of the questions covered in my book The Physics of Hockey.
