Shown in Figure III.16 is the layout of Target Areas III and IV. The various beam lines radiate from two switching magnets (SWI and SWII). Operational since 1985 are the beam lines for the atomic physics stations, the large scattering facility, the BGO gamma-ray facility, the split-pole spectrograph, general purpose beam line, the FMA, and APEX. The superconducting buncher located immediately before the switching magnet (SW1) will be used to rebunch or debunch the beams to obtain the time or energy focus on target. Because of the better geometry in this target area, better time and energy resolutions are expected (see discussion in Section II.A.2.). The vacuum systems are similar to that described for Target Area II. Similarly the patch panels for transportation of the signals from the experimental stations to the data room follow the same philosophy as outlined in Section III.B.3.
