I. General Information

Argonne National Laboratory is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Chicago. The Laboratory's main entrance is on Cass Avenue, south of the Cass Avenue exit off Interstate 55. Argonne's relationship with Chicago and O'Hare and Midway airports is shown on this Chicago area map. Limousine service between the airports and the Laboratory is available (see attached Table). Reservations should be made in advance if a limousine is needed between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00a.m.

To enter the Laboratory, users are required to have ANL badges (see section on Working at Argonne) or admittance passes which may be obtained at the Visitors Reception Center located outside the North entrance to the Laboratory. In order to obtain an admittance pass the Physics Division (Barbara Weller [630]252-4044) should be contacted prior to arrival and informed of the expected dates of arrival and departure. The ATLAS facility is housed in Building 203, whose location on the Laboratory site is shown on this ANL map.

Lodging facilities are available on site for users. The costs of these lodgings for University Users of ATLAS are subsidized in part by the University of Chicago, and hence reasonably inexpensive. Arrangements should be made at least 2 weeks prior to arrival and can be made through the Physics Division (Barbara Weller [630]252-4044). The lodging facilities are within walking distance (~15minutes) of Building 203 and the Argonne Cafeteria, but a car is probably desirable. The hours of the cafeteria are listed on the attached sheet together with information on nearby motels for those who might want off-site lodging. Off-site lodging is also subsidized in part by the University of Chicago for University Users.

For travel off site a car is needed. The University of Chicago has made a vehicle available for use by ATLAS Users. For information regarding the procedure for obtaining use of this car, the User should contact Barbara Weller([630]252-4044).

Also attached is a list of restaurants in the Argonne and Chicago areas which has been compiled in order to give an idea of what is available.
