EBSS2012

Exotic Beam Summer School - 2012

The aim of the Exotic Beam Summer School is to educate young researchers on the excitement and challenges of radioactive ion beam physics. The school has been held annually at the accelerator facilities at LBNL (88-inch), ORNL (HRIBF), Michigan Sate University (NSCL) and ANL (ATLAS) on a rotating basis. The schools consist of a series of lectures covering the following general topics: nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, nuclear astrophysics, weak interactions, experimental techniques, and accelerator concepts for rare isotope facilities. One unique feature of these schools is the hands-on activities where students spend their afternoons in the lab, learning about the techniques and instrumentation needed to carry out experiments with unstable beams while the mornings are reserved for lectures.

The EBSS series is sponsored by the US Department of Energy and National Science Foundation, and the following laboratories: Argonne National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. EBSS directors are Mike Carpenter (ANL), Rod Clark (LBNL), Michael Smith (ORNL) Mark Stoyer (LLNL) and Remco Zegers (NSCL/MSU).
